Dock Issues

I am having some Dock strangeness. I have an external screen on my desk which I use with my macbook. If my mac wakes up and it is no-longer plugged into the screen, or finds that it now is plugged into an external monitor where it wasn’t before my Dock will occasionally disappear.
Usually it is only a redraw problem, and resizing my Dock or dragging a windows across the Dock forcing it to redraw fixes the problem. Unfortunately this week I find that the Dock simply isn’t there, it is not hidden and it is not accessable.
Even after a restart the only way to see my Dock was to do a “killall Dock” from the terminal, or restart it using Tinker Tool.
